Frequently Asked Questions
Booking & Referrals FAQ's
Do I need a GP referral to book a scan?
No. While we accept referrals from GPs and consultants, we also offer a self-referral service for many scan types under our Non-Medical Referral Policy. Specifically for adults (18+) for specific scans, such as Musculoskeletal (MSK) and non-emergency Neurological imaging Our clinical team will review your request to ensure the scan is appropriate for your symptoms.
What types of scans can I book myself?
Under our self-referral policy, you can book scans for:
- MSK: Spine (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar), upper limbs (Shoulder, Humerus, Elbow, Wrist, Hand), and lower limbs (Pelvis, Hip, Thighs, Knee, Lower Leg, Ankle, Foot).
- Neurological: Non-emergency Brain MRI for headaches or dizziness.
- Whole Body: General wellness/diagnostic scans.
Are there any scans you do not offer via self-referral?
Yes. We cannot accept self-referrals for children under 18, emergency conditions (like suspected strokes), or scans requiring contrast-enhanced injections. If you require a referral for your scan we can provide an appointment with a private GP at an additional cost.
Is this service available to NHS patients?
We are, currently, a dedicated private diagnostic provider. This allows us to offer rapid appointment times, often within 24–48 hours, without the usual clinical waiting lists.
Availability to NHS patients will be coming soon.
How do I pay for my scan?
We accept all major credit/debit cards, including payment plans from providers like Klarna, ClearPay or PayPal. Private health insurances are not supported yet.
What makes our scanner different?
We utilize a Siemens Wide Bore scanner. Traditional MRI machines can feel cramped; a "Wide Bore" design provides significantly more headspace and a wider opening. This is the gold standard for patient comfort and is ideal for larger patients or those who feel anxious in confined spaces.
Is it suitable for sports injuries?
Absolutely. While we provide a full range of general diagnostic imaging (including brain, spine, and abdominal scans), our location and technology are optimized for musculoskeletal (MSK) and sports imaging, providing the high-resolution detail required by elite athletes and specialists.
Your Visit to Headingley Stadium
Where do I go when I arrive?

Is there parking?
Yes, dedicated parking is available for patients. We will provide specific parking instructions in your booking confirmation email.
Safety & Preparation
Who should NOT have an MRI?
Certain medical implants are contraindicated and may prevent us from proceeding. These include:
- Pacemakers (both MR Unsafe and MR Conditional models): NHI does not have the support of a Cardiac team to be able to safely perform MRI scans on MR Conditional models.
- Certain Cochlear implants, programmable shunts, or certain nerve stimulators.
- Metallic fragments in the eyes or shrapnel injuries when the metal fragment is still in place.
What should I wear?
Please wear loose, metal-free clothing (no zippers, jewelry, or underwire bras). We will provide a gown if your clothing is unsuitable.
Is the scan noisy?
MRI machines use strong magnetic fields and are naturally noisy, producing loud knocking or buzzing sounds. We provide ear protection and music to make you as comfortable as possible.
What does the scan feel like?
MRI is a painless, non-invasive procedure. You will hear a series of loud tapping or buzzing noises while the images are being taken. We provide high-quality headphones with music to make the experience more comfortable.
How long will I be there?
The scan itself typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes per body part. Because we are a private clinic, we pride ourselves on punctuality; we ask that you arrive 15 minutes early to complete your safety screening. Please note that arriving more than 15 minutes late may result in a cancellation.
