Private MRI Scans for Teenagers and Pre-Teens

Private MRI Scans for Teenagers and Pre-Teens

Finding an MRI appointment for a child or teenager can be difficult. Many families face long waiting times through the NHS, while some private MRI providers may have strict age restrictions or limited availability for younger patients.

NH Imaging welcome pre-teens and teenagers for MRI scanning

At New Horizons Imaging, we are able to welcome teenage and pre-teen patients for private MRI scans, where clinically appropriate.

We are registered to provide paediatric MRI services, which means we do not apply a fixed age restriction in the same way some providers may. Instead, suitability is assessed based on whether the child or young person is able to remain still during the scan.

NO GP REFERRAL NEEDED & NO WAITING LISTS

This is important because MRI scanning requires clear, accurate images. Movement during the scan can affect image quality, which may mean the scan needs to be repeated or may not provide the level of detail needed.

A calm, supportive MRI experience for younger patients

We understand that having an MRI scan can feel daunting, especially for younger patients or those who have never had one before.

Our team will help explain the process clearly, make sure your child feels as comfortable as possible, and support them throughout their appointment. They will receive the same high standard of care, facilities and attention as our adult patients, with a calm, patient-first approach from start to finish.

When is a child or teenager suitable for a private MRI scan?

In many cases, scans are carried out feet first, depending on the area being scanned. This can help the experience feel less enclosed and more comfortable for younger patients.

The key requirement is that the child or young person must be able to lie still for the duration of the scan.

As Wayne, Director of New Horizons Imaging, explains:

“We don’t actually have age restrictions for MRI as we are registered to do paediatric as well. The only restriction is based on the ability of the child to stay still during the scan.”

If you are unsure whether your child would be suitable, you are welcome to contact our team before booking. We can talk you through the process and help advise on the best next step.
